You are not just a lawyer!
Ok, so right now some of you are thinking that Caryn’s gone crazy because you are a lawyer. You have a job title that proves it.
I am going to try and convince you this is not true.
You are no longer just a lawyer. I am not just a teacher of English. I am a coach and an entrepreneur.
You are also 3 things:
In the old days as a lawyer you could turn up at work and, provided you knew your law you could serve your time and get your promotions.
You didn’t have to sell yourself or your services. Clients found you and everything in the garden was rosy.
That has now changed. You might think that being a good lawyer is good enough.
Here’s the shocking truth: It isn’t.
Just as things have changed for me. They are changing for you.
I am now a teacherpreneur. I no longer just teach English. I coach English to help lawyers break down their confidence barriers and perform better in their jobs and I run my own business. In the last 2 years I have had to learn a whole host of new skills so that I can survive in the ever evolving market. Here’s just a few:
Content production - videos, posts, articles, flipbooks, ebooks, etc.
Content posting - posts for different platforms, timings, rankings, etc.
Marketing, Sales funnels, Copywriting, Technology. The list goes on.
I recently made an inquiry about buying land in the metaverse so I could work there in the future!!!!.
Is all of this easy? No, it bloody well isn't!
The truth is there is no easy! Everything requires effort!
Right now career development is going through the biggest shake up in modern history. Experts predict that the young people entering the market now will have as many as 12-15 careers in their lifetime (this number keeps increasing).
Lawyers also have to face the fact that their role is changing and new skills are needed.
So what can you do to future proof your career?
As a business asset there are two key skills you need to master: Communication and sales.
Communication is your starting point because good communication
Allows you to:
Have I convinced you that you are not just a lawyer?
Do you agree or disagree? Hit the reply and tell me your thoughts.

Ted talk on careers:
One Idiom
Uphill Struggle
Meaning: Something that needs a lot of effort to succeed.
Making partner is an uphill struggle.
Ending the Ukraine/Russia conflict will be an uphill struggle.
One conversation starter
Making small talk can be hard because it's difficult to think of things to say after you've asked them about the weather and their journey.
I am going to give you a little help and suggest some topics each month. They may seem a little random but trust me - random, strange, weird you are going to learn to love them because they work.
This months topic is:
The Weekend
Don’t be shy about sharing your thoughts about the weekend.
Most polite conversations go like this:
A: Great, it's Friday. I’m looking forward to the weekend. How about you?
B: Yes, me too.
This is a bit of a superficial conversation. It’s something called a pleasantry. Polite conversation that isn’t personal and doesn’t require any great thought or involve any deep connection.
So how can you expand it? Use "because" (there is a psychological reason for this) to expand the conversation.
A: Great, it's Friday. I really love Fridays because tomorrow I get to relax and finish off a thriller. I am reading a novel by Agatha Christie. I’m a big fan of her books and films. What about you? What do you like to read or watch?
There are limitless ways you can develop this conversation. You could change the ending and say:
How do you like to spend your weekends?
Or,
Have you got anything nice planned for the weekend?
The point is it opens the door to talk about hobbies, books, experiences which will expand the conversation and create a good opportunity to connect.
One word
Aggressive
Aggressive has a number of meanings all relate to force. When used in business it is often linked to strategies for success.
It’s a great word that tells people that someone or something is behaving in a very forceful/assertive way because they want to succeed.
For example:
If you want to make partner you have to be aggressive in acquiring new clients .
He is respected as a very aggressive and competitive partner.
Now go ahead, use them in a conversation or in a letter and make them fly!
It's been great connecting with you.
